    AN ALBUM FOR NOBODY

This is an album about my faith and convictions. It’s an album about being a Christian when it’s increasingly hard not to be discouraged about the baggage of that title. It’s a Christian album that is pretty critical of Christianity… so I’ve essentially written an album for nobody. It’s an album about trying to come out of that cynicism and into the love, joy, and peace that represent our Creator. It’s an album about a God that cares about the poor, that cares about justice, that cares about the oppressed and the beaten down. I don’t have any agenda, just a calling to create honest work. I hope that if someone like me hears this album it will encourage them in their faith and convictions.

Verse 1 God of breath and galaxies, Who digs in dirt and shapes the seas, You hear my whispered prayer of need, And raised the redwood from a seed. Chorus Let us feel your presence small, Inside our walled off hearts and minds, And let us see you infinite, In stars in orbits you assigned. Verse 2 God of blood and ocean deep, Who ate the bread, who formed the wheat, You died in tears, in tortured pain, And now eternally you reign. Chorus Let us feel your presence small, Inside our walled off hearts and minds, And let us see you infinite, In stars in orbits you assigned. Outro God of breath and dirt and blood, Of stars and sky and fire and flood.

Confession 06:12
Verse 1 We are failing Lord, forgive us. We hate our enemies. We ignore the least, forgive us. Lock our doors and hide the keys. We are failing Lord, forgive us. We get off on outraged boasts. We ignore the least, forgive us. Our actions never leave our posts. Chorus We don’t value your creation, We consume for our own gain, We ignore your image in our fellow man, And use Your name. We claim Your Son in history that, Is blood stained, steeped in sin, A Christian nation built, On slavery, theft and war within Verse 2 We are failing Lord, forgive us. Our church does not look like Your Kingdom. We ignore the least, forgive us. A monochrome and not a prism. We are failing, Lord forgive us. We idolize our comfort. We ignore the least, forgive us. Our bank accounts, our foremost worship. Chorus We don’t value your creation, We consume for our own gain, We ignore your image in our fellow man, And use Your name. We claim Your Son in history that, Is blood stained, steeped in sin, A Christian nation built, On slavery, theft and war within Bridge Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner *Bridge is the “Jesus Prayer” from traditional Eastern church sources

Refrain Oh Lord, Oh Lord, Oh Lord, how long? Verse 1 It starts with a spark, some covert language, That he wanted the same things that you want, A bigger income, some reassurance, That no one’s gonna threaten what you’ve got. But the thing about sparks is, they fan to flames, That burn up all the subtle and unknown, And in its place is hate that fueled the spark, And an ugly bigotry from centuries, you can’t deny and you can’t disown, I guess at least you know you’re not alone. Verse 2 Hold up a Bible, in front of a steeple, That should be enough to fool most of the people, ‘Cause the truth is they don’t know what’s inside that book either, They just want to know you look like them and understand the symbol. If you don’t know the words that are inside, on the pages Words that say walk in humility, Words that say take up your cross, die to yourself, and follow me Then a book can be a symbol of just about anything. Outro A symbol of power, A symbol of wealth, A symbol of oppression, God help us, God forgive us, God have mercy on our souls.

VERSE 1 How do I know that I am on the right path? 14,000 weekly strong and 17 Million in my accounts. God has given me power and money, And I’ll be damned if scripture would try to take that from me. Every week a capacity room hangs on my every word, A white washed portrait of my myself, A trusting fearful herd. CHORUS 1 Why quote from the beatitudes, No room for meekness now, Rather, show them my Revelation, Store up influence and power. I preach to please my president, May he rule his kingdom well, His will be done in the USA, Glory and power all for sale. VERSE 2 How do I know that my logic is sound? I’ve researched every outcome and heard every view espoused. God has given me power and sense, So this scripture needs to meet my standard of intelligent address. Supernatural occurrences hit the cold cutting room floor, The sanitized philosophy, Of a man but God no more. CHORUS 2 Why believe miracles and epiphany, When there’s so much that we can know, Take the gains found in good ideology, Leave the fictions that I’ve outgrown. I’ll use Noah and Paul with impunity, Keep my property meek and subdued, Monticello empowered by slavery, A gospel exalting wealth and abuse OUTRO God Bless America, Home of the free, Except the people who don’t look like me, Except the people who don’t think like me. God Bless America, Home of the brave, Unless you’ve the means to protect yourself, In a gilded ivory cave. God Bless America, Land that I love, Except for the people that live in it, Thank God I can look down from high above.

I walked into that church, on that November morning weighed, Down by a crowd of men who look like me that worship petty fame. A systematic permit to exalt anger and shame, Wanting nothing more than to drown out your voice and holy flame. I’m often most alone when sitting in a wooden pew, Looking out among the mass I know would silence any view, That doesn't give them power or comfort, doesn’t lead them straight into, A world that looks as they have built it, only fortune to pursue. It’s easy to submit to your own dreams inside your head, It’s easy to lie down in a success filled lavish bed, They love that Jesus with the fair skin from their bathroom mirror, The one they’ve heard about and never have to reconsider, That Jesus always seems to hate the very same things that I hate. That Jesus keeps me happy, any struggle gets erased. That Jesus never asks too much he knows I’ve done my share. That Jesus doesn’t challenge me or ever interfere. You walked up to the pulpit, carried the weight of every person in the room, You carried every burden of a culture trying to keep you subdued, And I know you must be tired fighting against a castle wall, But you spread your wings and gracefully just flew above it all. Opened to Acts you spoke of a Son saved soul and Word saved mind, Inspired by the pages, submitted to the work of the Divine, No mind to the distractions you simply spoke of going home, Instead of stooping to defense you simply preached the Jesus that you know, This Jesus always challenges the things I hold and cling to most, This Jesus speaks of death and cross, but walks beside and pulls in close, This Jesus walks in squalor and will forgive only as I forgive, This very same Jesus says to die so that I may finally truly live. This Jesus takes care of the poor, This Jesus gives health to the sick, This Jesus says sell everything, This Jesus says leave, follow me. Home.

Enemies 04:49
Verse 1 God we confess we have too much, Our sin is wealth, And the accumulation of. Inside our walls we will not budge, You walk the streets, Among your children whom you love. Chorus Because the healthy need no doctor, Lord you came for the unwell. So let us cry out in our sick, A joyful, damaged peeling bell. Your grace was never for the righteous, It’s for the drunk, the weak and shamed. Your death was for your enemies, And I know enemy’s my name. Verse 2 Lord we profess we worship things, More often than, We honor and praise thee. We strut and boast our own acclaim, Our empty hearts, Yearn for your cleansing rain. Bridge Now we’re no longer dying in, The battle to deserve your love, We wave a pure white flag, and are accepted as a son. No we’re no longer dying in, A fight to stay above the water, We surrender our defeat and, You embrace us as a daughter. Chorus 2 Because the healthy need no doctor, Lord you came for the unwell. So let us cry out in our sick, A joyful, damaged peeling bell. We never had a shot at righteous, But we’re redeemed and aren’t the same. Your death was for your prodigals, And I know child is my name.

Verse 1 When I’m walking through the valley And I know I should not fear Sometimes your staff seems weak against The wolves that threaten near The gulf tonight is wide between Your truth and my belief Some nights I just can’t see beyond My sickness and my grief Chorus Your love is deeper than my doubts And it is wider than our fear It stretches farther than the distance Anyone has ever been Your grace flows stronger than my pain Your mercy finds us where we hide Your fountain drowns us in your life Your love is deep and it is wide Verse 2 When I’m standing on the mountain top And I hear your voice so clear And chase your cloud and fire with No worry and no fear When your glory is surrounding And your light outshines the black When we sing your praises every morning And get your blessings back Bridge We will praise when the dark fills up our night And we will praise in your glory blinding light We will praise in this ugly fallen world And we will praise as your kingdom is unfurled

Joy 04:10
Verse 1 This place seems smaller than before, Six months in, no end in sight, Seeming like the world’s on fire, Still darkness cannot hide the light. Chorus Because our joy does not depend on what happens around us, No our joy does not depend on what we see, And our joy does not arise from circumstance or success, Our joy is deeper still than all of these, When our lives seem overwhelming, And our safety net’s unravelling, The Creator still creates in me, Exalting joy! Verse 2 Iron chains attached to stone, Though they’d done no evil thing, Beaten, bloody, stripped, and flogged, Paul and Silas start to sing, Bridge I will praise because You’re holy, I will praise because You’re worthy, And you love even someone like me. We will praise when it is easy, We will praise when life is scary, We declare You’re the King of kings.

Verse 1 A month ago I sat beside my grandpa Softly played Amazing Grace, While sleeping in his hospice bed those Words felt bigger in that solemn place, He has no less days to sing God’s grace now That he’s died and moved along, He’s inside of my guitar and in my song, And we won’t be apart for long. Chorus 1 Because we will be together again one day, And there will be no hospital beds in our way, And when we are together again on that day, I won’t be alone when I sing of God’s amazing grace Verse 2 I feel like I need something to remember the Purpose of this place, If a church is like a body I feel dismembered After months of all this space, As we stay connected though our prayers and Worship through our digital screens, I still long to see your faces And to hear the congregation sing Chorus 2 And we will be together again one day, And there will be no internet in our way, And when we are together again on that day, I won’t be alone when I sing of God’s amazing grace Verse 3 Thorns pressed into your skull you walked the hill Of the very same name, Nailed into a cross and raised aloft beside two men Just the same, One ridiculed you, one knew your innocence Even through pain, And your grace declared that in Your Kingdom, You would see him again Chorus 3 And we will be together again one day, And there will be no sin or disease in our way, And when we are together again on that day, I won’t be alone when I sing of God’s amazing grace
